I totally used references. Kile and I both have guide berets, too.

My initial sketch for the white mandy was to have it be, like, a full-body mascot-costume with his face poking out of the... weird little "hole" looking part on white mandies... but... when I drew it... it... didn't really look good... :/ and then I thought about the sprout berets! And decided to have them wear the Beret, a leathery leaf-sleeved top and... I guess a leotard or something... with boots I can't draw boots... oh, well. Practice, practice, I guess.
I'm happy with this "mandy costume" design, though. It was hard making his large leafy arms look "crossed", though...
